The Eastern Railroad was an American railroad company founded in 1836 and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, built to connect Boston to Portland, Maine. Facing competition, the company was leased to the Boston and Maine Railroad in December 1884 and was purchased outright by the Boston and Maine on May 9, 1890, dissolving the Eastern Railroad as an independent company. Portions of its former route today form part of the MBTA Commuter Rail Newburyport and Rockport Line.
