Diamond Light Source is the United Kingdom's national synchrotron light source facility, operated by Diamond Light Source Ltd, a joint venture company established in March 2002. Based at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, it produces intense beams of light used by scientists to study the structure and properties of materials, from proteins for drug design to engineering components and archaeological artifacts. The facility is funded mainly by the UK Government's Science and Technology Facilities Council, with additional funding from the Wellcome Trust, and began serving user beamlines in January 2007, officially opening later that October.
