The Devon and Somerset Railway was a cross country line in England authorized by the Devon and Somerset Railway Act of 1864, built to connect Barnstaple in Devon to the Bristol and Exeter Railway network near Taunton. The first section opened in June 1871 and the full line opened in November 1873, with the Great Western Railway acquiring the company under the Great Western Railway Act of 1901. Passenger and freight services ended by 1970, and part of the route was redeveloped from 1988 onward to form part of the North Devon Link Road.
