DEMOS was the first internet service provider in the USSR, founded in Moscow in 1989 as a programmers cooperative initially called Interface before being renamed after the DEMOS operating system. The cooperative worked with the scientific network Relcom in 1990 to register the .su top-level domain, laying the groundwork for what became the Russian segment of the internet, known as RUnet.
