Databricks is an American data and artificial intelligence software company headquartered in San Francisco, California, founded in 2013 by the original creators of the open source Apache Spark project at the University of California, Berkeley: Ali Ghodsi, Andy Konwinski, Ion Stoica, Matei Zaharia, Patrick Wendell, Reynold Xin and Arsalan Tavakoli. The company provides a cloud-based platform for data analytics and artificial intelligence that runs across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform, and it developed the data lakehouse architecture that combines elements of traditional data warehouses with data lakes. Its offerings include Delta Lake, an open source project that adds transactional reliability to data lakes, Unity Catalog for data governance, and tools for building and running artificial intelligence agents; the platform also gives customers access to foundation models from companies including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
