Dairy Queen is a multinational fast food chain built around soft serve ice cream and frozen treats alongside hot food items, founded in 1940 by John Fremont McCullough, his son Alex, and franchisee Sherb Noble, with its first store opening in Joliet, Illinois. Headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota and operated through a franchise system, the chain has grown to roughly 6,800 locations worldwide, and its soft serve, at only about 5 percent butterfat, cannot legally be labeled ice cream under United States regulations. Dairy Queen has been owned by Berkshire Hathaway since 1998 and acquired the Orange Julius chain in 1987.
