Cromford and High Peak Railway

The Cromford and High Peak Railway was a standard gauge line completed in 1831 connecting the Cromford Canal wharf at High Peak Junction to the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge, built to carry minerals and goods across the hilly terrain of the Peak District in Derbyshire, England. The line relied on a series of rope worked inclines to manage the steep terrain and, despite never becoming profitable, remained in operation for more than a century before falling traffic led to its complete closure by 1967. Part of its route between Dowlow and Cromford has since become the High Peak Trail, a walking and cycling path.
