Cork and Muskerry Light Railway

The Cork and Muskerry Light Railway was a three foot narrow gauge railway company in County Cork, Ireland, built largely to capture tourist traffic to Blarney Castle. It opened its initial route from Cork to Blarney in 1887 and extended to Coachford in 1888, later adding an eight and a half mile extension to Donoughmore in 1893, and ran as a roadside tramway with locomotives fitted with cowcatchers for safety. The railway suffered serious damage during the Irish Civil War of 1922 to 1923, including to a bridge over the River Lee, and was repaired and folded into the Great Southern Railways in 1925. Rising road competition through the 1920s eroded its traffic, and the company closed for good on December 29, 1934.
