The Connecticut Southern Railroad is a 90 mile short line railroad company operating in Connecticut and Massachusetts. It was formed in 1996 as a spinoff of Conrail by shortline holding company RailTex, was acquired in 2000 by RailAmerica, and has been a subsidiary of Genesee and Wyoming since 2012. Headquartered in Hartford, Connecticut, it connects with CSX Transportation, the Providence and Worcester Railroad, the Central New England Railroad and Pan Am Southern, carrying imports such as lumber, steel and carbon dioxide along with exports of trash and recycling, and as of 2022 carried about 18,500 carloads annually.
