The Coniston Railway was an English railway company operating an 8.5-mile line in Cumbria between Coniston and Broughton-in-Furness, opened to passengers on 18 June 1859 originally to carry slate and copper ore from mines near Coniston to the coast. As mineral traffic declined the line increasingly served Lake District tourism, and the company invested in steam yachts, the Gondola and the Lady of the Lake, to attract visitors to Coniston Water. Passenger services ended in October 1958 and freight in April 1962 after just over a century of operation; the restored Gondola still runs seasonal services on the lake today under National Trust ownership.
