The Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro was founded on January 30, 1868 to build and operate railways in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, eventually running 1,536 kilometers of track in several gauges and carrying passengers along with cargo such as coffee, grain and livestock, known for a high standard of customer service. Nationalized in 1961 amid economic crisis and labor unrest, the company remained active from August 1872 until October 1971, when it was dissolved and folded into Ferrovia Paulista S/A, known as FEPASA.
