The Compagnie du chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris, a subsidiary of Belgian Baron Édouard Louis Joseph Empain's General Traction Company, was established in April 1898 to build and operate the Paris Métro following the city's 1883 decision to construct an independent subway network. Its first line opened in 1900 after twenty months of work, with a second line connecting Porte Dauphine and Nation opening in 1903. The company merged with the Nord-Sud Company in 1929, absorbed the Sceaux line in 1938 and merged with surface transit operators in 1942, before the RATP took over all its functions in 1949.
