CME Group Inc. is an American financial markets company headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the world's largest operator of derivatives exchanges. It was formed in 2007 through the merger of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which traces its own history to 1898 as an agricultural produce exchange, and the Chicago Board of Trade, founded in 1848 as one of the earliest organized commodity futures markets in the United States. CME Group later added the New York Mercantile Exchange and the Commodity Exchange to its holdings, and the combined company today operates trading markets in interest rate, equity index, foreign exchange, energy, and agricultural futures and options.
