Citigroup is an American multinational investment bank and financial services company headquartered in New York City, formed on October 8, 1998 through the merger of Citicorp and Travelers Group. The company operates through five main divisions covering investment and commercial banking, sales and trading, treasury and trade solutions, wealth management and retail banking, and consumer credit cards, and it is the third largest credit card issuer in the United States. It is the third largest banking institution in the United States by assets, counted among the country's Big Four banks alongside JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, with about two point six trillion dollars in total assets and roughly two hundred twenty nine thousand employees as of 2024. Citigroup traces its lineage through predecessor institutions including City Bank of New York, founded in 1812, and is designated a systemically important financial institution.
