Chunghwa Telecom is Taiwan's largest integrated telecommunications operator, headquartered in Taipei, established in 1996 when Taiwan's telecommunications operations were spun out of the government's Directorate General of Telecommunications into a state-owned corporation ahead of eventual privatization. The Taiwanese government sold down its stake through several share offerings beginning in 2000, and the company today trades on the Taiwan Stock Exchange with an American Depositary Receipt listing on the New York Stock Exchange, though the state retains a residual minority interest. Chunghwa Telecom provides fixed-line, mobile, broadband internet and multichannel television services and holds the leading market position across nearly all of these segments within Taiwan.
