The Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad is a Class III freight railroad headquartered in Michigan City, Indiana, operating a 182-mile line between Chicago, Illinois, and South Bend, Indiana, primarily hauling coal and steel. It traces its origin to the Chicago and Indiana Air Line Railway, chartered in 1901, and took its current name in a 1925 reorganization. The company also built and operated the South Shore Line, an electric interurban passenger service later described as the last of its kind in the United States, transferring that operation to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District in 1990; it is now owned by Anacostia Rail Holdings Company.
