The Chicago and Southern Railroad was a short-lived railroad company that built a line in northeastern Illinois running south from Chicago to Thornton. Incorporated on April 7, 1874, it opened the line in 1876 under lease to the Chicago, Danville and Vincennes Railroad, which used it to reach Chicago, and the route crossed several major lines including the Illinois Central Railroad at Harvey, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad at Blue Island, and the Chicago and Alton Railroad at Corwith before ending near Western Avenue. The company operated for only about four years before being sold at foreclosure on July 31, 1878 to representatives of the Grand Trunk Railway, which reorganized it as the Chicago and State Line Railway. Portions of its route were later run by the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and the Central Illinois Railroad.
