The Chicago and Michigan Lake Shore Railroad was founded in 1869 to operate a 169.8-mile network in Michigan connecting New Buffalo and St. Joseph, with later extensions to Grand Junction, Montague and Pentwater and branch lines to Grand Rapids and Big Rapids. It went into receivership late in 1876 and was reorganized as the Chicago and West Michigan Railroad in 1878, which consolidated with other companies into the Chicago and West Michigan Railway in 1881.
