Cheniere Energy, Inc. is an American liquefied natural gas company headquartered in Houston, Texas, the largest producer and exporter of liquefied natural gas in the United States. It was founded in 1996, originally as an oil and gas exploration company, before pivoting its strategy in the 2000s first toward importing liquefied natural gas and then, as American shale gas production surged, toward exporting it instead. Cheniere built and operates the Sabine Pass liquefaction terminal in Louisiana, the first large-scale LNG export facility built in the continental United States, and later added the Corpus Christi terminal in Texas, together making the company a central supplier of American LNG to buyers in Europe and Asia.
