The Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago Railroad, known informally as the Triple C, was a Southeastern railroad company established in 1886 to build a line from Charleston, South Carolina to Ashland, Kentucky in order to reach coal and iron ore deposits in the Appalachians. Construction began at Rutherfordton, North Carolina, with track laid both north and south from that point. The company ran into financial trouble when its major investor, Baker Brothers and Co., failed in 1890, and it was placed in court-ordered receivership; three years later its bondholders took control and reorganized it as the Ohio River and Charleston Railway.
