CF Industries Holdings, Inc. is an American fertilizer manufacturer headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois, one of the largest producers of nitrogen fertilizer in the world. It was founded in 1946 as Central Farmers Fertilizer Company, a cooperative created by regional farm supply cooperatives to secure a reliable nitrogen fertilizer supply for their farmer members, and it converted to a shareholder-owned public company in 2005. CF Industries manufactures nitrogen products including ammonia, urea and nitric acid, primarily for use as crop fertilizer, and it operates large ammonia production complexes across the American Midwest, Canada, the United Kingdom and elsewhere. The company has also pursued production of low-carbon and green ammonia, positioning some of its output as a potential clean-energy fuel and hydrogen carrier alongside its traditional agricultural business.
