The Central London Railway, nicknamed the Twopenny Tube, was a deep level underground railway company established in 1889 that opened its line in London in 1900; its tunnels and stations now form the central section of the London Underground's Central line. Funded by a syndicate of financiers from 1895 and built between 1896 and 1900, the railway originally ran 9.14 kilometres between Shepherd's Bush and the Bank of England serving thirteen stations, and was later extended to Wood Lane in 1908, Liverpool Street in 1912 and Ealing in 1920. After early financial success the company's passenger numbers declined amid competition from other underground lines and motor buses; it was taken over by the Underground Electric Railways Company of London in 1913 and passed into public ownership together with that company in 1933.
