Careem is a Dubai-based ride-hailing and delivery super-app operating across the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, offering ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery, bicycle rentals and a digital wallet called Careem Pay. It was founded in 2012 by Mudassir Sheikha and Magnus Olsson, both former McKinsey and Company consultants, initially as a corporate car-booking website, with Abdulla Elyas joining as a co-founder in 2015. In January 2020 Uber acquired Careem for about 3.1 billion dollars, making it the first unicorn startup in the Middle East outside Israel, and the company continues to operate under its own brand across more than 70 cities in ten countries. As of December 2023 the telecommunications group e& held a majority stake in Careem's broader super-app business, while Uber wholly owns its ride-hailing operations.
