Capitec, officially Capitec Limited, is the largest South African commercial bank by customer base, headquartered in Stellenbosch and licensed by the Reserve Bank of South Africa. It was established on March 1, 2001 by Jannie Mouton, Michiel Le Roux, and Riaan Stassen, and offers savings accounts, credit cards, loans, investment banking, and mobile telecommunications services through 880 branches and nearly 9,000 ATMs, South Africa's largest branch and ATM networks. As of September 2025 Capitec served 24.1 million customers, about 38 percent of South Africa's population, and by mid-2026 held the largest market capitalization of any South African commercial bank at a total value of R566 billion; its Capitec App has 14 million users, the most of any financial services app in South Africa.
