Capital Bank Financial Corporation was a bank holding company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, with 10 billion dollars in assets as of the first quarter of 2017 and 193 branches. It grew out of North American Financial Holdings, formed to take over banks weakened by the 2008 financial crisis, concentrating first on the Carolinas and Florida before expanding into Tennessee and Virginia in 2011. Despite buying seven distressed, money losing banks, Capital Bank was consistently profitable and posted improved returns in each of its five years of operation. The company completed an initial public offering in September 2012 and traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker CBF until its acquisition by First Horizon National Corporation in November 2017.
