Canadian Pacific Railway is a Canadian Class I railway incorporated in 1881 and headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada's first transcontinental railway, built between 1875 and 1885 to fulfil a commitment made to British Columbia when it joined Confederation in 1871. Primarily a freight railway, it was for decades the only practical means of long-distance passenger transport across much of Canada and was instrumental in the settlement and economic development of Western Canada.
