Calne Railway Company

The Calne Railway Company was a British railway company incorporated under the Calne Railway Act of 1860, with royal assent granted on 15 May 1860 and authorized capital of 35,000 pounds. It built and operated a five-mile single-track branch line from Chippenham to Calne in Wiltshire, opening to goods traffic on 29 October 1863 and to passengers on 3 November 1863, and obtained a second act in 1864 raising its authorized capital by a further 14,000 pounds to cover construction overruns. Financially troubled throughout its independent existence, the company was sold to the Great Western Railway under the Great Western Railway Act of 1892, with the transfer taking effect on 1 July 1892.
