The Caledonian Railway was one of the two biggest of the five major Scottish railway companies before the 1923 Grouping of Britain's railways. Established under an act of Parliament of 31 July 1845 and based in Glasgow, it built lines connecting the English rail network to Glasgow and extended its reach to Edinburgh and Aberdeen. The company ran express passenger services and heavy mineral traffic alongside a dense network of branch lines around Glasgow. It was absorbed into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923.
