Caffrey's Irish Ale is a beer that combines the serving temperature of a lager, the smooth texture of a stout and the taste of a traditional ale, now owned and produced by Molson Coors and distributed through Coors Brewing Company. The Caffrey brewing family began operating in Dublin in the late eighteenth century, and the modern brand was relaunched in 1994 by Bass Brewery, brewed for a time at the Ulster Brewery in Belfast, which had operated since 1897 before closing in the mid 2000s under a later owner. The beer originally carried five point two percent alcohol by volume, reduced to four point two percent in 2001 and to three point eight percent in 2010 as sales declined, and it uses a nitrogen widget in its canned form to reproduce a draught like character. First year sales reached about one hundred fifty thousand barrels, but volumes fell from two hundred thousand barrels in 2002 to about thirty five thousand in 2011, and the brand was withdrawn from the United States market around 2002 in favor of Coors's Killian's brand; it remains sold today in the United Kingdom and Canada.
