British Land Company plc is a British real estate investment trust headquartered in London, one of the largest property companies in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1856, originally to acquire and develop land in London and other British cities, and grew over more than a century and a half into a major owner and developer of commercial property. British Land's portfolio is concentrated in London office campuses and out-of-town and mixed-use retail parks across the United Kingdom, and the company has increasingly focused on large mixed-use London developments combining office, retail and residential space, such as its Broadgate and Regent's Place campuses. It converted to a real estate investment trust in 2007 under legislation that changed how UK property companies are taxed.
