BNSF Railway is one of the largest freight railroads in North America, operating roughly 33,000 miles of track across 28 states and employing about 36,000 people. It was formed on December 31, 1996 through the merger of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and the Burlington Northern Railroad under a holding company established the previous year. Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, BNSF hauls intermodal freight, coal and grain across three transcontinental routes linking the western and eastern United States. Since February 2010 it has operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway.
