BioNTech SE is a German biotechnology company headquartered in Mainz, founded in 2008 by the physician-scientist couple Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci, together with Christoph Huber, to develop individualized immunotherapies, initially focused on cancer treatment using messenger RNA technology. BioNTech became widely known in 2020 when it partnered with the American pharmaceutical company Pfizer, already live in this atlas, to develop an mRNA-based vaccine against COVID-19, which became one of the first COVID-19 vaccines authorized for widespread use in December 2020. The company continues to develop mRNA-based vaccines and immunotherapies for cancer and infectious disease beyond its COVID-19 vaccine work.
