Biogen Inc. is an American biotechnology company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and one of the oldest independent biotechnology companies still operating. It was founded in 1978 in Geneva, Switzerland, by a group of scientists that included Nobel laureates Walter Gilbert and Phillip Sharp, among other molecular biology researchers, and it later relocated its base of operations to Massachusetts. Biogen concentrates on treatments for neurological diseases, historically best known for multiple sclerosis drugs, and it partnered with the Japanese pharmaceutical company Eisai, minted in this same wave, to develop lecanemab, marketed as Leqembi, an antibody treatment for early Alzheimer's disease.
