Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) was the music division of the German media conglomerate Bertelsmann, formed in 1987 from the 1985 joint venture RCA/Ariola International that combined RCA Records with Bertelsmann's Ariola Records and affiliated labels such as Arista Records. Headquartered in New York City, BMG grew to include BMG Music Publishing, described as the world's third largest music publisher and the largest independent one, and held a fifty percent stake in the joint venture Sony BMG Music Entertainment from 2004 to 2008. Bertelsmann sold the bulk of BMG's assets to Sony Corporation of America in October 2008, and the remaining rights business relaunched as BMG Rights Management.
