The Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan is a German brewery owned by the Free State of Bavaria, sited on the grounds of the former Weihenstephan Abbey in Freising and affiliated with the Technical University of Munich. Its traditional founding date of 1040 marks when Abbot Arnold's monastery acquired brewing and serving rights from the town of Freising, though the documentary basis for that date has since been identified as a seventeenth-century forgery, with brewery operations reliably documented only from 1675; hop cultivation in the surrounding area is traced to 768. The monastery brewery became state property after Bavaria's 1803 secularization, and today the operation employs 184 staff, producing about 45.3 million liters of beer annually across sixteen varieties distributed in more than 60 countries.
