The Bank of New York was an American bank founded in 1784 by a group that included Alexander Hamilton, making it one of the three oldest banks in the United States. It operated as an independent institution for more than two centuries before merging in July 2007 with Mellon Financial Corporation, founded in 1870, to form the Bank of New York Mellon Corporation, now known as BNY. The combined institution, headquartered in New York City, became one of the world's largest custodian banks and securities services companies.
