Auto-Train Corporation was a privately owned passenger railroad that operated from 1971 to 1981, founded by Eugene K. Garfield, a former United States Department of Transportation employee. Its trains included autorack cars that let passengers bring their own vehicles along on the journey, running primarily along the Eastern Seaboard between Lorton, Virginia and Sanford, Florida beginning December 6, 1971, with a secondary route to Louisville, Kentucky operating from 1974 to 1977. The company suffered financial difficulties from expansion losses, high crew costs and accidents, and ended service in April 1981. Amtrak later revived a similar concept as the Auto Train beginning in 1983, which became one of its most popular services.
