The Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited, commonly known as ANZ Bank, is a multinational banking and financial services company headquartered in Melbourne, Victoria, and Australia's second-largest bank by assets and fourth-largest by market capitalization. Its current corporate structure dates to October 1, 1970, when the Australia and New Zealand Bank merged with the English, Scottish and Australian Bank in what was then the largest bank merger in Australian history; the predecessor Australia and New Zealand Bank had itself formed in 1951 from the 1835 Bank of Australasia and the 1837 Union Bank of Australia. ANZ is one of the Big Four Australian banks alongside Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank and Westpac, holds the largest banking presence in New Zealand, operates across 34 other countries, and together with its subsidiaries employs around 42,000 people serving more than 11 million customers worldwide.
