The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, widely known simply as the Santa Fe, was an American railroad chartered in 1859 and built westward from Topeka, Kansas, eventually forming one of the principal rail routes connecting the American Midwest to the Southwest and California. It became one of the country's largest and most recognizable railroads, its distinctive red, yellow and silver "Warbonnet" locomotive livery and its Super Chief passenger train among the best-known symbols of American railroading in the twentieth century. In 1996 it merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad to form the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, known today as BNSF Railway, ending its existence as an independent company.
