Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A., commonly known simply as Generali, is an Italian insurance company headquartered in Trieste, one of the largest insurance groups in Europe. It was founded in 1831 in Trieste, then a major port city of the Austrian Empire, as a general insurance company covering marine, fire, and life risks for the empire's Adriatic trade. Generali grew over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries into one of the dominant insurers across Central and Southern Europe, and the company today provides life and property and casualty insurance, along with asset management, to customers across dozens of countries, with particular strength in its home Italian market and across continental Europe.
