Amway Corp is an American direct selling and multi-level marketing company that manufactures and sells health, beauty, home care and nutrition products through a global network of independent distributors. It was founded in 1959 in Ada, Michigan, by Jay Van Andel and Richard DeVos, who had previously worked together distributing Nutrilite vitamin products, and it became business literature's most commonly cited example of the multi-level marketing compensation model. The company and its founders were the subject of the 1979 Federal Trade Commission case In re Amway Corp., which held that multi-level marketing structures are not illegal in themselves, though it also found Amway guilty of price fixing and making exaggerated income claims.
