Amstel is a brewery founded in 1870 in Amsterdam by Charles Antoine de Pesters, Johannes Hendrikus van Marwijk Kooy and Willem Eduard Uhlenbroek, with its first brew completed on October 25, 1871 and formal operations beginning January 15, 1872. Heineken has owned Amstel since 1968, and the original Amsterdam facility closed in 1982 with production consolidated at Heineken's Zoeterwoude plant, where the brand is now headquartered. Over the twentieth century Amstel had established subsidiaries across the Dutch East Indies, Jordan, Curacao, Puerto Rico and Greece, and its beer is now distributed in roughly 75 countries.
