All Nippon Airways, commonly known as ANA, is Japan's largest airline by passengers carried, headquartered in Tokyo and tracing its founding to 1952, when it began as a small helicopter and light-aircraft charter operator before expanding into scheduled airline service. ANA joined the Star Alliance in 1999 and operates its principal hubs at Tokyo's Haneda and Narita airports, competing directly with Japan Airlines as one of the country's two dominant carriers. The airline is the launch customer for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, having placed the type's first order and operated its first commercial flight in 2011, and it is majority-owned through the holding company ANA Holdings.
