Alaska Airlines is a major United States carrier headquartered near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, the flagship subsidiary of Alaska Air Group. It traces its lineage to a small Alaska-based air service founded in 1932 that consolidated with several other Alaskan carriers over the following decades under the Alaska Airlines name, later building Seattle into its primary hub and expanding service across the West Coast, Hawaii and beyond. The airline acquired Virgin America in 2016, substantially expanding its California presence, and in 2024 agreed to acquire Hawaiian Airlines, bringing a second major island carrier under the Alaska Air Group umbrella. Alaska left the Oneworld alliance's predecessor arrangements behind its long independent codeshare network and formally joined Oneworld as a full member in 2021.
