Airbus is a European aerospace corporation whose primary business is the design and manufacture of commercial aircraft, alongside separate defence, space and helicopter divisions. It originated as Airbus Industrie, a consortium formed in 1970 by French, German and Spanish aerospace firms to compete with American-built airliners, and became Airbus SE in 2015 after its parent companies merged into the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company; in 2019 it emerged as the world's largest manufacturer of airliners.
