Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, known as ADNOC, is a state-owned oil and gas company headquartered in Abu Dhabi, wholly owned by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and responsible for the great majority of the United Arab Emirates' oil and gas production. It was founded in 1971, the same year the United Arab Emirates itself was formed, to take direct control of the emirate's hydrocarbon resources through a network of specialized operating subsidiaries and joint ventures with international oil companies. ADNOC is one of the largest oil companies in the world by production, holding substantial proved crude oil reserves, and has in recent years expanded into petrochemicals, renewable energy and international investment through vehicles such as ADNOC Gas and XRG. The company plays a central role in the UAE's economy and government revenue.
