ABN AMRO Bank N.V. is the third largest bank in the Netherlands, headquartered in Amsterdam, offering asset management, commercial banking, investment banking, private banking and retail banking. It was formed on September 21, 1991 through the merger of Algemene Bank Nederland and Amsterdamsche en Rotterdamsche Bank, institutions whose own histories trace back through earlier mergers to banks founded in the 1820s and 1870s. After an aggressive international expansion, the bank was acquired and broken up by a European banking consortium in 2007 and 2008, and its Dutch domestic operations were nationalized by the government during the 2008 financial crisis. The government relisted the bank on the stock exchange on November 20, 2015, retaining majority ownership before reducing its stake to around 20 percent by September 2025.
