Ratan Tata was an Indian businessman who served as chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, from 1991 to 2012 and again in an interim capacity in 2016 and 2017. During his tenure the group expanded aggressively overseas, including the acquisitions of the British steelmaker Corus Group in 2007 and the British luxury automotive brands Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford in 2008, and under his direction Tata Motors launched the low-cost Tata Nano car aimed at first-time car buyers in India. A great-grandnephew of Tata Group founder Jamsetji Tata, he was widely regarded in India as a symbol of principled, philanthropically minded business leadership, and he died in October 2024.
