Patrice Motsepe is a South African businessman who founded African Rainbow Minerals, a mining company he built after leaving legal practice to acquire rights to marginal gold mine shafts in the late 1990s, restructuring them profitably as major producers scaled back operations following a fall in gold prices. He became South Africa's first Black billionaire on the strength of the company's later expansion into platinum, iron ore, coal, nickel and other minerals, and in 2013 he pledged to give at least half of the wealth generated by his family's assets to charitable causes through the Motsepe Foundation, becoming the first African signatory to the Giving Pledge started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. He has also served as president of the Confederation of African Football since 2021.
