Luca Pacioli (c. 1447-1517) was an Italian mathematician and Franciscan friar whose 1494 treatise Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportioni et Proportionalita was the first printed work to describe the double-entry bookkeeping system already used by Venetian merchants, earning him lasting recognition as the father of accounting.
